Paint Finishes Explained: Which Sheen for Which Room

Published June 1, 2026 · Exton Painters

Picking the color is the fun part; picking the sheen is the part that actually affects how the room looks and holds up. Here’s the plain-English version of what each finish does and where it belongs.

The one trade-off to understand

Sheen is a sliding scale, and it comes down to a single trade-off: the flatter the finish, the better it hides wall flaws but the harder it is to clean. The glossier the finish, the more washable and durable it is but the more it shows every bump and roller mark. Everything below follows from that.

The finishes, low to high sheen

  • Flat / matte — No shine. Hides patches, roller marks, and uneven drywall best, which is why it’s the usual pick for ceilings and works well in low-traffic adult bedrooms. The downside: it’s the hardest to wipe clean.
  • Eggshell — A soft, low glow. The most popular wall finish for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms — it hides flaws reasonably well and cleans up better than flat. A safe default for most walls.
  • Satin — A bit more sheen and noticeably more washable. The right call for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and kids’ rooms — anywhere that gets scuffed, splashed, or wiped down often.
  • Semi-gloss — Shiny and tough. The standard for trim, baseboards, doors, and cabinets, and a good choice for bathrooms with a lot of moisture. It takes scrubbing and stands up to hands and cleaning.
  • Gloss — The shiniest and most durable, but it shows every imperfection underneath. Used for a high-end look on doors and some cabinetry when the surface prep is flawless.

A simple rule of thumb

Walls in eggshell, trim and doors in semi-gloss, ceilings in flat, and bump up to satin in the wet, high-traffic rooms. That covers most homes — and where it doesn’t, we’ll talk through it with you before we buy a drop of paint.
